A Day in the Life of
West Virginia Libraries
Charleston, W.Va. – What is the one place that offers computers with
internet access, book discussion groups, early literacy programs,
bridge clubs, tax assistance, summer reading programs, teen
volunteer opportunities, genealogy guidance, health and well being
information, family game nights, movies, books and magazines – free!
Step through the doors of any West Virginia library and you are in
that place. Libraries introduce you to the most interesting people
you’ll ever meet, whether a character in the latest best seller, a
character portrayal from HistoryAlive!, or the character reading at
Story Time. You can connect to them all at the library. An old adage says that a picture is worth a thousand words, so in that spirit, the West Virginia Library Commission launched Snapshot Day: A Day in the Life of West Virginia Libraries. Participating libraries across the state collected numbers and photographs depicting the activities on a selected day, April 21, 2010. The libraries hosted meetings, literacy programs, grandparents programs, book discussion groups, therapy dog programs, bridge clubs, quilting clubs, and an endless list of activities designed to improve, educate or entertain the public. Now that all the material has been collected, WVLC has posted the pictures and statistics at www.wvsnapshotday.org to share with the public a more complete picture of busy libraries throughout the state.
